=

42 percent of expats like you are struggling to integrate smoothly at the moment because while they know their value and expertise, they don’t understand Dutch language and Dutch culture. What is even worse, 67 percent of expats fail within the first twelve months.

=

Most expats who have completed an intercultural training program are struggling, because their trainer didn’t know how to facilitate a training course for the whole family.

=

In an attempt to solve this problem, there is a large increase in the number of expats who try to succeed by themselves, but who fail due to the lack of quality learning tools and experienced coaches.

THERE ARE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPATS IN THE NETHERLANDS BUT WHEN THEY TRY TO ADJUST WITHOUT ANY KNOWLEDGE OF HIGH-QUALITY LEARNING TOOLS, THINGS GET WORSE.

MANY FAIL BY NOT UNDERSTANDING DUTCH MANAGEMENT.

A lot of expats without good adjustment to Dutch culture have conflicts with their management. Their career stalls and they are unhappy and unproductive. This must be solved.

AND WHAT ABOUT THE LACK OF TIME FOR THEIR FAMILY DUE TO ADAPTATION CHALLENGES?

Even when expats do thrive in their career, their family seem to have problems. With changing roles and responsibilities, adaptation is really challenging for children and partners due to a lack of training opportunities.

I AM TINA AND THIS IS MY STORY

I was born in Germany. At a very young age, my parents and I moved to Zambia, then back to Germany. I was 10 years old when we moved to Zimbabwe and again I was uprooted from my home and had to painfully leave the friends I had made behind.
Strangely enough, one would think I would settle down somewhere permanently, as I grew older. Quite the contrary, I ended up going to the UK for my studies and returned to Germany to complete my Masters' degree in Germany. When my daughter was born my husband and I moved from Germany to South Africa. I got a career opportunity I couldn't reject. Lucky for me that my husband  was willing to move with me. Once there we encountered many problems due to a totally different culture. I could find my way but in a very time-consuming way. My husband couldn't integrate that easily.
We didn't have a coach nor learning tools to help us.
During my years as a counselor responsible for life skills development and community programs students, young professionals and executives in South Africa, I saw many expats from all around the world struggling with the same, regardless of the country I was living in at the time.
Then, I had an ah-ha moment that brought me the solution I was looking for. In the last decade, my passion shifted me towards educational consulting, including the development of dialectical methods of teaching, development, design, and implementation of various Organizational Training on Intercultural Sensitivity, Diversity Management, Leadership, and Change Management in a Blended Learning format.

I AM ALEX AND THIS IS MY STORY

I was born in Germany. I finished school, studied and then decided to move to The Netherlands to follow my passion and study Jazz singing. As a student, I didn’t have a coach nor learning tools to help me get over culture shock and adaptation problems. As a consequence, I moved back to Germany after a year.

I finished my Master’s in Germany and got a job offer in Amsterdam. Being skeptical, I hesitated. The last adventure did not go as planned. I would not be me if I let that opportunity pass, so I decided to move again. After a year I had the opportunity to do a Ph.D. in Germany. When I moved back to Germany after a year, something utterly unexpected happened to me: I was homesick and wanted to move back to The Netherlands. I had a difficult couple of months, trying to adjust to life back home.

My a-ha moment, when I finally understood why so many people struggle with life abroad was when I was when I started working in the intercultural field. Many expats struggle with the adaptation process. Adapting to a new culture takes time and effort, but it is well worth it, if people have ongoing support.

In the last decade, my passion for how people learn, perceive, and think about the world around them led me to develop an intercultural training program that is based on rock solid scientific concepts on the one hand, and practical approaches that have reached broad consensus in the intercultural field on the other hand. For me, the best thing in the world is to see how what we at Bilingual Solutions do adds value to the lives of our clients and helps them and their families to safely settle into a new environment.

I am Mechthild, and this is my story.

I was born in Germany and grew up in the Ruhrgebiet, the former industrial heart of North-Rhine Westfalia. I began my studies in Bochum and later moved to study at a university in Southern Germany to focus on Latin America Studies. During this phase, I had the idea to move to South America after graduating. I decided to move to Argentina first. Later I lived and worked in Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and Mexico. I quickly realized that business life was really different from what I had experienced in Germany. Often, I was astonished by what I experienced in daily life. Unfortunately, I had to figure it all out by myself. At that time, there was no one whom I could ask. I did not have a coach for reflection on intercultural issues and challenges.

After returning to Germany, I made a decision. I wanted to support others who were about to move to South America for business, so they would not have to face these challenges. I knew that I had to integrate the perspective of the companies and employers because my focus was on business collaboration. This is why I decided to move on and become a certified intercultural trainer and coach, organizational development specialist, and business coach.

In more than 20 years in business, I have constantly seen, how important it is for expats to have the opportunity to reflect upon their own and other’s behavior and thoughts. At the same time, I saw the challenge in facilitating these learning and reflection processes in a one- or two-day training session. Being able to reflect is one aspect, but being able to adjust and broaden one’s communication strategies and behavioral repertoire is a totally different endeavor.

As an intercultural trainer and coach, and as a facilitator in organizational development, a blended learning approach for intercultural training is a huge advantage for me and my learners.
